Preparing today's youth for their roles as tomorrow's leaders is one of Ohio 4-H’s most important goals. Ohio's 4-H teen leadership development program opportunities include:.
Leadership: Part Of All 4-H Projects
Every 4-H member is involved in at least one of the more than 200 projects offered in Ohio. 4-H’ers spend approximately half their time in each project in learning the subject matter to which the project relates, and the other half in leadership development, citizenship development, career education and preparation for the workforce.
4-H Leadership Projects
4-H projects are planned experiences in which youth develop knowledge, attitudes, skills, and aspirations related to a specific topic. It is primarily through project curricula that information and research results are disseminated or "extended" from OSU to youth throughout Ohio. The Ohio 4-H leadership curriculum currently includes projects which are being continuously updated, and new leadership projects are in development.
4-H Club Officer And Committee Systems
4-H is a group experience in which members gain leadership knowledge, aspiration, skills, and attitudes through real-life responsibilities as officers and committee members. Resources and training are available through www.ohio4h.org and through county OSU Extension 4-H Offices to maintain and strengthen the Ohio 4-H club officer and committee systems.
Junior/Teen Leadership Programs
Most Ohio counties offer a special teen leadership program for teens to be involved in advanced leadership opportunities in a group of peers who have leadership potential.
4-H Camp Counselor Opportunities
Teens develop advanced leadership abilities by serving as 4-H camp counselors, as peer helpers, as teen program assistants and in other capacities. Teens receive training, supervised internships, and practical experience in these counselor roles through their County OSU Extension 4-H Programs.
4-H Teen Board Members
By serving on local, state, and national 4-H boards, and by representing 4-H on the boards of partner organizations, 4-H teens gain real-life leadership experiences. Resources and training are available to maintain and strengthen 4-H teen boardsmanship and governance opportunities.
4-H CARTEENS
4-H CARTEENS programs are offered in about half of Ohio's 88 counties. The “CAR” in CARTEENS stands for “Caution And Responsibility”. “TEENS” refers to the teenagers who help prepare and present the program. In CARTEENS programs, 4-H teen leaders teach traffic education safety programs to first-time teen traffic offenders, while also building offenders’ self-esteem and interpersonal skills. Teen traffic offenders attending this program have typically been cited for speeding, stop sign violations, reckless operation, and other, similar moving violations, and those who attend 4-H CARTEENS programs are less likely to re-offend as teenagers than are teen traffic offenders do not participate in CARTEENS programs.
4-H Ambassador Opportunities
The Ohio 4-H Ambassadors are a select group of 4-H teens who serve as 4-H youth spokespersons throughout the state, as emcees for major 4-H events, and as presenters for 4-H programs. In addition, county 4-H programs offer County Ambassador Programs, Awareness Teams, Public Relations Corps and related teen leadership opportunities.
Special Emphasis Leadership Programs
Special emphasis leadership programs are offered in many counties. Resources and training are provided to strengthen and expand these efforts.
State 4-H Leadership Camp
Leadership Camp, sponsored by Nationwide and the Ohio Farm Bureau Federation, is the epitome of a successful "learn by doing" approach to leadership development. The 2012 State 4-H Leadership Camp will be August 8-12 at 4-H Camo Ohio. Please contact your County OSU Extension 4-H Educator for selection and registration information.

Ohio 4-H Teen Conference
A strong leadership dimension is incorporated into the annual Ohio 4-H Teen Conference held in Columbus in March each year. 4-H Teen Leaders are invited to be presenters as well as participants at the Conference, which involves approximately 800 4-H teens each year.
National & International 4-H Leadership
Teens represent Ohio 4-H through many national and international leadership opportunities each year. Ohio 4-H professionals and volunteers work with these teens to prepare them for success before, during, and after their experiences.
