Staff News & Notes - Week of March 8, 2010
Hi,
For the better part of last week I spent commuting and participating in a National 4-H Program Leaders’ Meeting in Indianapolis. I found that it was a good time to connect faces with the names that I have been teleconferencing with over the past several months. The purpose of the meeting was really two-fold: First, it was an opportunity to learn about the status of 4-H nationwide; and secondly, there were “professional development” components.
The first professional development component was a session by Kent Keith. Dr. Keith is a speaker for the Greenleaf Center for Servant-Leadership. His session as on “Servant leadership – finding meaning by identifying and meeting the needs of your customers and colleagues”.
Embedding in his presentation were points around what he called the “Paradoxical Commandments”. He developed and wrote these in 1968 when he was only 19 years old. I found it interesting that someone of that age could have and express so much insight. I also think that these thoughts have value to all of us. Some of the commandments perhaps have more applicability to our personal lives, but if we think about the things 4-H Professionals do in our daily work, their message is especially sound.
A good description is found at http://www.kentmkeith.com/index.html. Here are his “Paradoxical Commandments”:
- People are illogical, unreasonable, and self-centered. Love them anyway.
- If you do good, people will accuse you of selfish ulterior motives. Do good anyway.
- If you are successful, you will win false friends and true enemies. Succeed anyway.
- The good you do today will be forgotten tomorrow. Do good anyway.
- Honesty and frankness make you vulnerable. Be honest and frank anyway.
- The biggest men and women with the biggest ideas can be shot down by the smallest men and women with the smallest minds. Think big anyway.
- People favor underdogs but follow only top dogs. Fight for a few underdogs anyway.
- What you spend years building may be destroyed overnight. Build anyway.
- People really need help but may attack you if you do help them. Help people anyway.
- Give the world the best you have and you'll get kicked in the teeth. Give the world the best you have anyway.
Do good.
Thanks,
Tom

Changes for the 2010 State Fair Food and Nutrition Event
The Food and Nutrition committee has met and discussed changes to the State Fair activities. We have decided to make some major changes to the Food and Nutrition State Fair activities. We will be changing from 4 stations to three stations. Those stations will be:
- My Pyramid
- Interview
- Project Presentation
All of the stations will be project specific. The interview station will contain questions specifically from the participant’s book.
My pyramid will be somewhat activity based, but also answering questions related to the member’s knowledge gained from their book.
The new station for 2010 will be a “Project Presentation” station. The participant will be responsible for bringing a 3 pronged folder that includes 8 ½” x 11” pages. The participants will create a maximum of one page (one-sided only) per “activity area” or “interest area” as designated in the front of their project books. These pages could be in collage, journaling, timeline, photo, or any other format that would illustrate the work and knowledge of the participant. Each page could be different or could be a combination of styles providing the 4-Her to reflect on their learning experience. There will be no points for scrapbooking style.
This “Project Presentation” station will be judged using a rubric allowing the participant to explain their project.
Considering that some county fairs will overlap or run close to state fair. Counties might want to consider including this activity in their county judging so that youth selected for state fair will be prepared for the state fair contest.
