Staff News & Notes - Week of March 1, 2010
Hi,
March is the transitional month. We all are waiting for winter to end, and even though we know that there may still be many individual days of bad weather in March, we also know that if there is severe weather, it will be short-lived. We notice that there is still daylight past six p.m., and if we go outside in the morning, we can actually hear birds singing.
March is also the time in our professional lives when detailed planning is turning into reality. Most have selected older youth to be 4-H camp counselors and organized 4-H camp counselor training, and now that training is taking place. Enrollment and organizational information has been distributed to our volunteer corps, and now those completed enrollments begin to trickle in. Local planning and action committees have been meeting throughout the winter months, and now those events being planned and programs to be implemented are coming to fruition. Anyone who is closely associated with the junior fair at a county or independent fair knows that the fair book has been published, or soon will be.
If we think about our larger organization, we can note that it was one year ago this week that we announced, and began to implement, our new Extension staffing structure, with the creation of nine Extension Education and Research Areas. That transition began in March, and continues through the present.
This March is the transition to the second full year of EERA operation, and those things that we thought would happen, are happening. I have never been one to say, “I told you so..”, but here are some statements I wrote in this venue one year ago, in March 2009:
From March 9, 2009:
- Educators will become more specialized and there will be opportunity for more collaborative efforts.
- The depth of knowledge available to any county will be increased.
From March 16, 2009:
- Area Teams will be formed, more specific Educator Specializations will be selected, and creative methods of program delivery will be formulated.
- I think at this time the most important thing that we can do is to not be restricted by traditional boundaries, but rather to think about the opportunities that can evolve.
March 30, 2009:
- There will be new leadership opportunities in the Area and Programming Teams.
- We will have the perfect time to terminate some of the low impact programs that we have been doing for years.
- We will learn how to better use technology to enhance our educational programming efforts.
I think we can put an emphatic “Yes, we are doing this” beside each of those bullet points above, and I am sure there are many others. We have proved that we can “transition”.
Thanks for being the 4-H Professionals that you are,
Tom
MXC Rescheduled After Weather Cancellation
MXC Camp from last weekend was cancelled due to road conditions throughout the state. The MXC Planning Committee believes the MXC training program is a valuable educational program for our counselors and is worth conducting. After looking at various dates, the camp will be conducted on March 13 with registration from 4:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. This time allows teens registered for the Ohio Volunteer Conference to still attend OVC and also the MXC Camp. On Sunday, March 14, MXC will conclude at 4:30 p.m.
The planning team is notifying all those who were registered by email of the new dates. Registration will be reopened to those who might be able to attend during the new dates. New participants may register at: http://surveys.cfaes.ohio-state.edu/cfaes/index.php?sid=89865&lang=en They will need to register and pay their $40 fee by Monday, March 8 at 12 noon. Register on-line and send payment to 4-H Camp Ohio at: 11461 Camp Ohio Rd. St. Louisville, OH 43071
If counselors who were registered are not able to attend the new dates, the committee is working with Camp Ohio to determine if partial refunds will be returned. Some costs were incurred, such as perishable food being ordered for the February weekend. The status of refunds will be determined after the March 13 camp.
Questions concerning MXC? Please contact Niki Nestor McNeely at mcneely.1@cfaes.osu.ed, 513-470-0389 or Nadine Fogt at fogt.12@osu.edu, 740-335-1150.
Food Animal Products Academy – June 29 - July 1, 2010
The Ohio State University Department of Animal Sciences and 4-H Youth Development are offering a Food Animal Products Academy (FAPA) for 4-H members, who are interested in animal agriculture and the products they produce. This academy will be held June 29-July 1, 2010, on the Columbus campus of The Ohio State University. Designed to introduce participants to food animal product development and careers in food animal industries, the Food Animal Products Academy will provide youth hands-on learning activities about animal agriculture through the food animal industry; product development, marketing and distribution; food preparation; and more. Participants will watch demonstrations, prepare meals, and tour businesses to learn about the food animal industry.
4-H members ages 14 years and older at the time of FAPA who have been actively involved in projects taken for food production are encouraged to apply. Examples of food animal projects include beef, sheep, swine, goats, dairy, and poultry.
Youth must pay a $100.00 participation fee. Meals, dormitory housing, and resource materials are paid for through an Ohio 4-H Foundation Grant.
The application deadline is May 14. Space is limited to 50 participants, who will be notified of their acceptance by May 21. The $100.00 participation fee will be due no later than June 4 and must be paid in full at that time. Icing Smiles
The State 4-H Office was recently contacted by Tracy Quisenberry of the non-profit “Icing Smiles”. The Icing Smiles mission is to provide critically ill children and their siblings with a custom birthday cake. The organization also serves by providing the families at Ronald McDonald House with special treats for holidays and other occasions. It is a very young non-profit which is currently 100% volunteer. They are working to expand their base of volunteer bakers.
4-H has a wealth of talented bakers. It seems possible that some 4-H groups would volunteer their talents to further the Icing Smiles mission. Icing Smiles provides volunteer bakers with a unique opportunity to use their skills to give back to the community in a very rewarding way.
Please check out their website and facebook page (see links below). Both resources will help you to see the difference that Icing Smiles can make for these special children.

National Military Childcare/Youth Development Internship Program
A new partnership between the Cooperative Extension System and the Department of Defense has provided the funding for a national, military childcare/youth development internship program. Through this initiative, students and recent graduates will have the opportunity to develop professional skills in childcare and youth development through practical work experience with military children, youth, and families. Interns’ compensation will include travel to and from the internship site and housing for the duration of the placement. Interns will be placed on military installations across the United States with some opportunities for international placement.
The Military Extension Internship Program is accepting applications through March 26th for internships beginning August 8th and lasting through the fall. More information and application materials can be found at www.extension.purdue.edu/military, and we are happy to answer any questions you may have. Specific questions re: the internships may be referred to: Amy Schott, Purdue University Cooperative Extension Service, aeschott@purdue.edu
