Staff News & Notes - Week of February 8, 2010

Hi,

Thanks to all of you who were able to attend the 4-H Professionals’ Update this past Monday.  Vicki Schwartz and I noted that 80 of the 88 counties were represented. That is excellent participation! I know it was a long day, but the enthusiasm and interest were maintained right up through 5:30 p.m. A special thanks to all the planners and presenters, and congratulations to the entire group of Peoples’ Choice Award Winners!

I heard from several of you that the sessions were all quite informative and worthwhile. That is good. There have been requests by some who were not able to attend for handouts and other materials that were shared. Those presenters, who are reading this, if you have not already shared your handouts, please send to Lisa Jinks. She will accumulate, and distribute later this month.

With the success of this session, and the success of our meeting last October, I think it wise to continue the same for the next go-around. We plan to have our next statewide 4-H Professional Update on November 3, 2010, and the first Monday in February in 2011 is February 7. Please place those dates on your calendar. If I can work it, I will fund the mileage to the November gathering (no promises yet), if you can support the travel to the February Update.

So, what are the primary advantages of these face-to-face sessions? Our Ohio  4-H Professional Community:

[1] Shares ideas and approaches to delivering quality 4-H Youth Development programming

[2] Hones individual teaching and presentation skills

[3] Commiserates with each other – it is good to know that we have common problems, and sometimes we can identify common solutions; if not, it just feels better when we know we are not alone

[4] Collaborates with Action Teams, EERA 4-H Professionals, Planning Committees, and individuals on a variety of 4-H programs, activities, and events

[5] Keeps Extension and 4-H Administration aware of common and county issues and challenges

[6] Hears a uniform message relative to the direction of Extension, response to questions, and how issues will be addressed

[7] Realizes just how productive and effective we are at what we do

[8] Becomes better acquainted with those more experienced among us, and meets those of us who are new

[9] Recognizes achievement and promotions of our finest

[10] Has fun

That is a great list of advantages.

   Thanks for what you do.

Tom

4-H Space Adventure Camp

4-H Space Adventure Camp is planned for June 15 – 17, 2010, at Marietta College, Marietta, Ohio. The camp is designed for students who are currently in grades        5 – 7. They do not need to be current 4-H members in your county program. Participants will live on the Marietta College campus and explore the world of flight with the help of college faculty and trained 4-H camp counselors. It’s three fun-filled days of rockets, computer simulations, hot air balloons and more. The cost of $175 includes housing, meals, and all program materials. Financial assistance is available for those who qualify. Space is limited to 36 campers and is designed as a one-time experience.

Materials that can be used to promote the camp to science teachers or to 4-H members have been posted on the Ohio 4-H “Events and Opportunities” webpage at http://www.ohio4h.org/youth/EventsandOpport/index.html. Included is a cover letter to teachers, press releases for media and newsletters, teacher recommendation form and financial nomination form, all in pdf format.  You will receive a copy of each document in the February 8th county mail packets. Questions? Contact Amanda Forquer, forquer.13@cfaes.osu.edu, 614-292-6942, or Vicki Schwartz schwartz.4@cfaes.osu.edu.
