Staff News & Notes - Week of 12.14.09
Hi,
Over the years my domestic skills have evolved to where I now clean up after every meal at home. My reasoning is that my wife does the majority of the meal preparation, so it seems logical that I can clear the table, store the leftovers, and prepare the dishes, pans, and utensils for washing. Now that I think of it, my wife and I never discussed that I should do this, but I know she is a very clever woman.
Anyway, now we have the luxury of a dishwashing machine. I load the machine, add the detergent, and turn the dial to “start”. When this machine cycles to finish, I remove the washed items, dry them when necessary, and then stack them in their designated places in the kitchen cupboards. In our first house, we did not have a machine, so it was a longer process of hand washing the dishes, drying, etc.
Back then is when my wife and I had the initial discussions about dish towels. I could not understand why a dish towel ever has to be washed. It you use a dish towel to dry dishes, or pans, or whatever, that have been supposedly cleaned and rinsed, how does a dish towel ever get dirty? If it does, then you are not doing a good job of washing, right? I am not talking about those dish towels that are used to clean up spills, or to wipe counter and table tops, but those towels that are only dedicated to drying dishes. One should wash and dry dishes with clean hands, so a dish towel should never get dirty from personal hygiene of that person drying the dishes. I could extend this argument to bath towels, but I think you get the point.
I know most of you, especially those of the female gender, are chuckling a bit by now. I also know that it is a good idea to wash dish and bath towels. It just makes good sense. The analogy that I am trying to build here is that even though things are going well, and that there appears to be no contamination of programs, events, procedures, and schedules, it is still a good idea to refresh things a bit on a regular basis. Even though things seem to be happening as always, perhaps there are unanticipated results or problems. A deliberate review may not spurn any changes, but we will know that we are doing things right.
Thanks,
Tom

National 4-H Youth Conference Center – Seeking Program Assistants
CWF gives 4-Hers the opportunity to strengthen their communication, leadership, and other citizenship skills on a national level. Nearly 2,000 young people exchange ideas, practice respect, and form friendships with other youth from diverse backgrounds throughout the summer. Through hands-on activities, simulations, and tours of various monuments and memorials, participants figure out what citizenship means to them and develop action plans to make a difference in their home communities. As a CWF Program Assistant, these 4-H leaders will create, develop, and facilitate curriculum to be used during the 2010 program.
We are looking for individuals with at least a high school diploma (preferably some college experience) and a passion for youth development, hospitality, teaching, history, politics, or leadership. If you know a college student looking for credit towards graduation, National 4-H Council will happily work with the student and the school to make this possible.
