Staff News & Notes - Week of 4.28.08
Dear Colleagues:
As the organization continues to work towards the release of the strategic plan and then implementation of that plan, it is important to continue to focus our efforts. One strategy to focus our efforts is to identify signature programs. Many states are working to identify signature programs (or similar titles) as they work on strategic planning and focusing their efforts. Cornell Cooperative Extension provides the following to help clarify signature programs:
Signature programs are major, statewide efforts addressing widely recognized public concerns. They are exemplars of the organization’s mission and programming capability and characterized by high quality and impact. Signature programs are intended to:
- convey an accurate image of current programming and organization capacity,
- provide a means for focusing effort and aggregating related program outcomes and impacts,
- illustrate the campus/community partnership, and,
- serve as a basis for marketing and fund development.
Signature programs are not going to be the only programming an organization develops and implements and the signature program(s) may be a focus for 3-5 years and then new programs are identified. So, if you could identify 2-3 signature programs for OSUE 4-H Youth Development, what would they be? We strongly encourage you to share your thoughts on signature programs and provide feedback to Vicki at Schwartz.4@osu.edu by May 5th!
We hope to hear from each of you!! Have a great week!
Sincerely
Ryan & Vicki
Interim Co-Assistant Directors

Updates from Animal Sciences
Jim Kinder, Chair of Animal Sciences, provides a weekly update to Department faculty and staff and often includes information sent directly to his attention. In a recent update, Dr. Kinder shared the following that we want to share with you. Thanks to each of you for promoting these programs!
From Amber Moffett: "Just wanted to pass along the results from the State 4-H Horse Bowl Contest held 12 April here at the Animal Science Department. We had a record number of youth participate this year, 31 junior teams and 25 senior teams. Yes, you did your math correctly...that is approximately 275 youth plus parents, coaches, and leaders. The Champion and Reserve Champion Senior Teams will represent Ohio at several national contests (Eastern National 4-H Horse Round-up in Louisville, KY; All American Quarter Horse Congress in Columbus, OH; and the Morgan Grand National Show in OKC, OK if the team so chooses). Dr. Cole and I would like to thank all the volunteers that helped out during the contest serving as moderators, judges, scorekeepers and timers: Dr. Robert Kline, Debbie Manring, Mr & Mrs. Bender, Matt Davis, Bruce Scarberry, Shari Zachrich, Lauren Holtvoight, Heather Manring, Katy Bender, Chris & Izzy Manring, along with numerous students from AS 541 and OSU Horsemen's Association. A special thanks goes to Kellie O'Meara and Courtney Kremer for pinch hitting as moderators in the Junior Quiet (or not so quiet) Room. Thanks so much!! Amber. ps. Hancock went undefeated in the Senior contest which is a pretty tough feat since the Ohio 4-H Horse Program has had numerous Top 5 finishing teams at all National Horse Bowl contests the last 5 or 6 years. Also we will be holding our State 4-H Horse Speaking Contest in the Animal Science Arena on Saturday 03 May at 9am. Junior Results: 1) Ashtabula A; 2) Knox; 3) Montgomery B; 4) Licking A; 5) Mahoning. Senior Results: 1) Hancock; 2) Mahoning; 3) Portage A; 4) Montgomery A; 5) Cuyahoga.
Message from John Anderson - "Hi Jim, Last weekend (April 12) Dennis and I went to Michigan State University to help put on their first Bi State 4H Poultry Clinic, a joint venture with OSU. It was a big success (200+) and we used the same sessions we used here in Wooster."
National 4-H Partners
It is important for all of us to be aware of what is happening with our national partners that play an important role in the 4-H movement. As you have an opportunity in the future, we would encourage you to review and bookmark the National 4-H Headquarters and National 4-H Council websites.
National 4-H Directory - Don't Miss This!
Launched on April 1, 2008, the National 4-H Directory is a great way to get a comprehensive look at curriculum being offered by National 4-H AND by other states. Check out www.4-Hdirectory.org, where you can search by keyword, grade, level, and more for print and for electronic curriculum products. Every state 4-H office is responsible for maintaining its own materials, which are listed here only if they have been written or revised in the last seven years. (That's why not all Ohio 4-H materials are listed.) Prices for Ohio publications are for direct and out-of-state customers only. Questions? Please contact Amanda Forquer at 614.292.6942 or forquer.13@cfaes.osu.edu with questions.
