Staff News & Notes - Week of 2.11.2008
Dear Colleagues:
What a great turnout for the 2008 Ohio 4-H professional development meeting! We were thrilled that so many of you were able to attend and be a part of the first professional development conference in the Nationwide & Ohio Farm Bureau 4-H Center. We hope that you enjoyed attending the workshops, visiting with colleagues, learning about the new facility, meeting new professionals, and gaining new ideas to use in your program. We encourage you to complete the on-line evaluation that you received and we welcome additional input that you may have regarding future professional development opportunities.
Many of you were actively engaged in a new Strategy or Action Team and we appreciate your willingness to help build this concept over the next several months. The intent is for the teams to define their purpose and product and to then move forward under your leadership. There will be mechanisms to report and share progress, but please do not wait on a specific charge from Vicki! We are excited about the energy that was exhibited and we are looking forward to seeing the results that will positively contribute to the Ohio 4-H Youth Development program!
In keeping with a recent theme, we want to again recognize individuals and/or groups that contributed to and supported the building of the Nationwide & Ohio Farm Bureau 4-H Center. Jim Dailey, Campaign Chair, can be described in two words: determined and passionate! Jim contributed in so many ways to the campaign and led the efforts to make this dream a reality. In large part, it was his determination that often kept the process moving. During much of the campaign and design process Anne Foltz served as president of the Ohio 4-H Foundation Board. Anne & John Foltz’s commitment to the project was unwavering and their attention to detail ensured that we had a facility that represented the needs and desires of volunteers and donors. Again, our appreciation to Jim, Anne, & John!
Sincerely,
Ryan & Vicki
Interim Co-Assistant Directors

Information about the Ohio 4-H Dog Program, Ohio State Fair Dog Show and Activities, and information that might be helpful for county dog shows and activities, have been updated on the website. If you missed last weeks' workshop on "Working with Queries" there are two more opportunities this week. This workshop will be held on Tuesday, February 12 at10:00AM and will be repeated again at 2:00PM. The second workshop scheduled for this week entitled: "Using Youth Enrollment to track members that attend Quality Assurance" will be held on Thursday, February 14, 2008 at 10:00AM and will be repeated again at 2:00PM. To participate in either workshop using WebEx click on the following link: http://www.ohio4h.org/blueribbon/. I have been asked lately if there is a easy way to change all the club codes so that the clubs can be alphabetized. The answer is there is an highly evolved method and a not as evolved method. If you are interested in learning more let Jim know. As always if you need help give Jim a call or send him an email at elder.2@cfaes.osu.edu.
Volunteer Position Descriptions Wanted
Volunteer position descriptions are an important part of the Ohio 4-H volunteer selection process by identifying key roles and responsibilities of various volunteer positions. If your county has created position descriptions, the State 4-H office would like to have copies to use and share! Please send any template position descriptions to Sarah Leidheiser at leidheiser.9@osu.edu.
Bags of Hope Service Project - Ohio 4-H Teen Conference
Bags of Hope: How You Can Help With The Teen Conference Service Project
Master Clothing Educators (MCE's) and State 4-H Fashion Board Members are requesting contributions of fabric, webbing or grosgrain ribbon, and toiletries for “Bags of Hope”, the 2008 4-H Teen Conference Service Project. This year's service project will involve conference participants with little or no sewing experience as well as experienced sewers in using sewing machines to make great-looking tote bags. The bags will then be filled with toiletries and children items and donated to battered women's shelters in central Ohio. Participants will also receive instructions for organizing similar service projects in their own communities. Here is what's needed:
- Each large bag will require:
- two pieces of fabric cut 13 inches by 18 inches, plus
- 28 inches of webbing or grosgrain ribbon for handles.
- Each small bag will require:
- two pieces of fabric cut 13 inches by 9 inches, plus
- 24 inches of webbing or grosgrain ribbon for handles.
- Toiletries and items needed by those in women's shelters are also requested to fill the bags (small child-safe toys, coloring books and crayons, pencils, cards, stencil books, soap, shampoo, conditioner, combs & brushes, deodorant, toothbrushes, toothpaste, dental floss, cotton swabs, lotion, socks, travel tissues, etc.)
Please forward this information to your 4-H teens, 4-H volunteers, 4-H clothing project advisors, FCS groups, and others who may be interested. It will be helpful if fabric contributions are pre-cut to the measurements indicated before they're donated. All contributions may be brought directly to the February 16 Teen Conference, given to a Master Clothing Educator or Fashion Board Member, or sent ahead of time to Kathy Cox at the State 4-H Office (Office # 417), 2201 Fred Taylor Drive, Columbus, OH 43210.
