About Science Alive

Teacher Training Opportunities

Involvement in Ohio's Science Alive 4-H School Enrichment usually begins with a teacher-training workshop conducted by OSU Extension personnel. Typically, these localized workshops focus on one or more STEM-based curriculum materials that serve as the cornerstones of the school enrichment program. The training provides firsthand experience in the use of these specialized materials.

Workshops center on presenting science in invigorating ways, rather then through traditional lecture and demonstration methods. Teachers who take part in one of the Extension-sponsored workshops may receive Continuing Education (CEUs) toward recertification.

Classroom Partnerships

Upon completion of the trainings, teachers present the programs to their students in partnership with local OSU Extension personnel and trained 4-H classroom volunteers. In many cases, county Extension offices provide the equipment and supplies necessary to conduct the programs.

Benefits to Students

Students who take part in Science Alive 4-H School Enrichment programs benefit from 4-H's rich tradidtion of experiential learning. Youth can further expand their exploration of STEM and many other subjects by joining a 4-H Club.

Program Costs

Ohio's 4-H School Enrichment programs are part of a National 4-H initiative to improve STEM education in the classroom by helping teachers become better non-formal educators and by helping students understand and apply STEM-related subject matter and skills. The programs also are intended to create lasting partnerships between community volunteers and classroom teachers.

County, state, and federal sources often join together to support these programs. The programs can be offered at little expense to schools, with minimal fees to defray the cost of travel, teaching materials, and supplies.
